King Alfred's cake

Found in Talbot Forest Scenic Reserve, Geraldine, New Zealand, on a tree that had fallen over.
This is perhaps a damaged specimen of Daldinia concentrica, what is often commonly called "coal fungus". You can see why...

A happy little hover fly

Sometimes called flower flies, these insects are in the family Syrphidae.
Adults feed mainly on nectar and pollen.

Word Challenge

I challenge myself (and others): say something positive to at least 2 people each day. Yeah! Let's see how I go...

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." -Ephesians 4:29

"Kind hearts are the garden, kind thoughts are the roots, kind words are the flowers, kind words are the fruits. Take care of your garden and keep out the weeds, fill it with sunshine, kind words and kind deeds." - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
